Dance: A Dream Came True

When I was 9/10, I found New Kids On The Block and absolutely loved their music. I would play the VHS (yes I am that old haha) of their concert over and over.  It was during one of these many viewing moments that I decided to try and learn some of the choreography.  I would perform it for family any time they came to visit.  That was the day my love of dance was born.

My parents enrolled me in dance classes, disco and majorettes.  I loved every second of my classes and soaked it all up.  There was just something so amazing about learning new choreography and just letting go and having fun.  I picked the routines up quickly and not only did I know the dance for my level, I knew the dances for the levels above me too.  Dancing came naturally to me but that doesn't mean I didn't work hard.  My high school journey started and I stopped dance class to focus on my education but my love for dance certainly remained.

Fast forward to college and after years of dancing in my room and learning the latest Spice Girls or Steps dance with friends, a new and very exciting opportunity and there was no chance I was letting that slip through my fingers. A family friend put together a small group to perform a show for charity,  It was meant to be a one off but as we all had so much fun, we went on to perform again at a night club, again for charity.  I was having the best time.  The we had the chance of one last show and this was going to be the biggest performance and I was most certainly going to be involved.

At the time I was still in my first year at college, so I would attend college Monday to Friday 0am to 4pm.  On a Wednesday evening, we would have 3 hours of rehearsals and the same on a Saturday at the venue.  At first it was hard as I would be tired from college but I loved every single second of those rehearsals.  To make sure I was fully dance fit, I went to a dance class with my former dance teacher on a Friday night for 90 minutes.  So every week I was dancing for 7 and a half hours. I went from a size 16 to a size 12 quickly. A Sunday would be spent with family.  A Monday, Tuesday, Thursday and Saturday night would be for doing course work and seeing family and friends.  How I managed to do all that I will never know. There is no way I could do that now!!

It wasn't long before the day of the show arrived.  We had one last full run through of the show that afternoon and then it was showtime.  I was a nervous wreck but so excited.  The large dance floor was in the centre of the room and on three sides of the "stage" was the seating area.  We had a crowd of two hundred people.  There were no empty seats and it was amazing to see such a great turn out for a great cause.  We raised money for the Rottenrow Maternity hospital, the hospital where me and my sister were born.  They saved our lives.

For the show we were split into groups.  My group performed B*Witched, Steps and Spice Girls numbers and the whole group performed to the Thank ABBA for the music medley and the females all performed to Madonna Like a Prayer.  We were nuns - good girls gone bad.  The whole evening was magical.  The nerves and all our hard work paid off.  The show was a massive success,

I will never forget that feeling of the lights hitting me, the music starting and the feeling of being free of any worries.  When I dance I am a completely different person.  I become confident and the happiness I feel when I dance is evident to those watching.  I remember when we were performing Tragedy and I had a second to take in the audience, the smiles on their faces, seeing them dance and sing along was just incredible.   It was one of the best nights ever and a dream came true that night - performing on that stage and making people happy. I will never forget it.

TikTok and YouTube Faves

When I first came across TikTok during the pandemic, how has that been 5 years, I wasn't really sure if I liked it. I mainly watched animal videos as they were just the cutest and I certainly never posted anything myself. It was only in the last 2 year that I became more involved with TikTok and I am really glad I did because I found some amazing accounts from awesome people I could relate to. YouTube has always been my go to for videos on everything that I like and I still love that platform as its connected me with a great community too. Here are some of my fave peeps on the apps.

Altered Sky - The Interview

Picture taken by James Hamilton - 25th May 2017

As a music lover, I am always looking out for new bands to listen to.  Even better if they are local. Recently, a fantastic band from Glasgow competed in the Hard Rock Rising Battle of the bands and they won!! Let me introduce you to Altered Sky.

We All Need An Escape

When things get a little too much, like anyone else, I look for a distraction, an escape, from what is bothering me.  As much as we all end up facing the issue head on, sometimes a little time out helps clear our head and helps us to relax.

Music To My Ears

I love listening to music when I am out and about myself.  Over the years I have went through many pairs of earphones.  Some stopped working quite quickly and some of them had bad sound quality. Earphones, for me, need to block out the outside world and have good all round sound quality.

Songwriter Connect

I absolutely love music and think that life would be so so dull without it.  Over the years I have often thought how it would be great if I could write my own music and hear the finished song being played on the radio but sadly I am not that talented but I do have a few friends who are amazing at writing music but find it hard, and expensive, to get the support they need to make their dreams happen.  Well I have found the perfect platform that can help them and many of you continue with your song writing - Songwriter Connect.

Iron Maiden - A Fans Perspective.

I love music and think life would be dull without it.  Some people like only one genre but I love a little bit of everything.  My husband James loves Iron Maiden as do I.  So I thought I would interview him about being a fan of one of the biggest bands in history.

Before I go into the interview, here are some facts about Iron Maiden.

Meeting my idol

Shane June 19th 2012

As you have probably guessed I am a massive Westlife fan.  Now as much as I love all the lads I do have a favourite!! Mr Shane Filan.

I tried for years and when I say years I mean it.  Since 1998 I had tried to meet the lads and in 2012 I thought my time had come.

WESTLIFE

Have you ever loved a band so much that you followed them their whole career and I mean from day 1 when they were a support act to the last day of their farewell tour? I have, along with thousands of others.

That band were called Westlife.

1998 and I am in the SECC to see Boyzone and on walk "Westside" lets just say they got a bigger reaction from the crowd than the headline band!!  I was hooked from day one.

After that it was a blur of buying all their singles, album and waiting for their first tour but before that I went to see them on the Smash hits tour.

When they announced their first tour I managed to secure front row centre seats. I could not believe my luck.  The night of that show came and I stood in front of Westlife and was so nervous and excited I really had no idea how to react, especially when Nicky sang "What Makes A Man" towards me.  Yes my legs turned to jelly lol.

I went to their concerts 2002 and 2003.  Sadly from 2004-2008 I missed out on their tours for reasons I won't go into here. I still bought their albums, dvds and singles.

2009 after a years break my boys were back!!  New album AND a new tour.  My fab husband bought me tickets and I was hyper from then until May 2010 when me and my friend Maria went to see them.  The lights went out and they walked on.  I was in tears. All the excitement was too much.  The whole show went by in a blur.

Their next album, Gravity, came out and another tour announced.  I saw them twice that tour at the SECC then at Hamilton Racecourse.  Yet again I was not disappointed.

3 months after I saw them at Hamilton thousands of hearts broke, including mine, when Westlife made the following announcement.

After 14 years, 26 top ten hits including 14 number one singles, 11 top 5 albums, 7 of which hit the top spot and have collectively sold over 44 million copies around the world, 10 sell out tours and countless memories that we will forever cherish, we today announce our plan to go our separate ways after a greatest hits collection this Christmas and a farewell tour next year. The decision is entirely amicable and after spending all of our adult life together so far, we want to have a well-earned break and look at new ventures. We see the greatest hits collection and the farewell tour as the perfect way to celebrate our incredible career along with our fans. We are really looking forward to getting out on the tour and seeing our fans one last time.

Over the years Westlife has become so much more to us than just a band. Westlife are a family. We would like to thank our fans who have been with us on this amazing journey and are part of our family too. We never imagined when we started out in 1998 that 14 years later we would still be recording, touring and having hits together. It has been a dream come true for all of us.

Kian, Mark, Nicky and Shane

I couldn't believe what I was reading.  Then I really gave it some thought.  The guys are the same age as me and had been in Westlife since they were teenagers.  They were grown men now and it was all they had known.  As much as I was upset my favourite group would be no more I 100% understood why they decided to disband.

May 27th 2012 and I am at the SECC watching my 4 Irish lads on their farewell tour, which the fans nicknamed the The Tissue Tour.  I was not too bad that night I managed to hold it together.

June 19th 2012 and my fave band done something for me that I will never ever forget and am so grateful for its hard to put into words.  They put me on their guestlist. Yes you read that right. After I was scammed (don't ask) the newspaper had contacted Westlife and told them I had been a fan since 1998 and explained what had happened. When I got the phone call I broke down in tears. I was stunned utterly stunned.  I remember sitting in the crowd that night thinking this is it the last time I will be at their concert.  I cried a lot that night.  That is when I realised it was all over.

23rd June 2012 and I am sitting in a local cinema watching their last ever concert at Croke Park.  It came to the speeches and that was me. I was gone.  After that concert finished I was actually ok.

Westlife gave the fans many happy years of fun, excitement and amazing memories.

From the bottom of our hearts we thank you xxxx

Shane Filan - My Side Of Life

I love reading and I love music so you can imagine my excitement when my favourite singer, Shane Filan, announced he was releasing his autobiography this month.  Lets just say I pre-ordered it and waiting patiently, OK not so patiently, for the postman to bring me my copy.

Shane Filan, My Side Of Life arrived yesterday and I decided to wait until the children were in bed before I started it, well it does deserve my full attention after all.

Me and Shane July 2013 Radio Tour, Edinburgh

Shane's autobiography tells us about his rise to fame with Westlife, meeting the love of his life Gillian and the dark days after he was declared bankrupt.  He has been quoted as saying he wants to help others who have been in a similar situation.

I am currently on chapter 5 and honestly I have had a good laugh already, especially the part about him dying his hair blonde and getting a fake tan so Simon Cowell wouldn't recognise him!!

Once I am finished the book, no doubt after more laughter and some tears, I will tell you more about it BUT if you love reading a good autobiography I honestly recommend buying Shane's book. You won't be disappointed.
