As you know from a previous post, I have been reading books that are different to the usual genre I turn to. I was kindly sent a copy of "Secrets Of The Singer Girls" by Kate Thompson. and I was more than happy to review it for you.
Secrets Of The Singer Girls is set in Bethnal Green, London during World War 2 and tells the story of Poppy, aged 16, who arrives in London's East End after leaving the countryside to begin life as a seamstress.
In the first chapter we read about Poppy leaving the country home she worked in with her mother due to a dark secret, which at this point, we don't know what it is, and her arrival in London. The way Kate described Bethnal Green, the smog and the factories it was easy to imagine what it looked like and I felt as if I was transported onto the street and could see it all myself. It was easy to like Poppy as a character and feel a connection.
Two other characters really stood out for me, Vera and Daisy. Daisy, who is Vera's younger sister, is very glamorous and very into the latest trends and Vera, the forelady in Trout's factory and who is tough, yet supportive. I think we all know people like them in real life so, again, they were easy to relate to and like.
The book tells us about the tragedies, turmoil and solid friendships during quite possibly the scariest time of their lives. It just proves that even though they were all in a vulnerable situation they were strong and determined women.
Many tears were shed when I was reading this book and knowing the inspiration behind the book came from a group of woman (see video below) makes me proud of the women (and men) who worked to ensure our soldiers had everything they needed during the war.
If this sounds like the kind book you would love to read, and I am sure it is, you can buy it here - Paperback is £3.85 and Kindle version is £3.59.
It sounds like a great read. Thank you for your recommendation.
